How Should Kids Avoid Ticks and Why?

When there is nice weather, kids will not let any opportunity to play outdoors, go hiking, or assist you in gardening go to waste. Unfortunately, bugs will also take this opportunity to compromise comfort inside and outside homes.

According to a recent report by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 300,000 people in the United States get Lyme disease. This disease is caused by bacteria from a tick bite. Thousands more people get other tick-borne diseases, such as babesiosis because of the bite.

Based on these facts, it is important to encourage your kids to avoid ticks at all cost. Let us look at tips on how to avoid these malicious and detrimental parasites.

Cover Up

Covering your entire body will prevent ticks from latching on thereby preventing bites. Tucking their pants into socks will make your kids look like nerds but will help protect them from tick bites as they take part in various activities outdoors.

Use Quick Dry Clothing Setting

Unknown to most people, ticks can tolerate the harsh conditions inside your washing machine. They are very vulnerable to drying out and so it is recommended to give your clothes a quick whirl in the dryer on high heat for several minutes before folding and storing them in your closet.

Consider Changing your Landscape

Ticks are fond of living and breeding close to the interface between a wooden area and the yard. Changing your landscape to deter rodents that carry ticks, such as mice and deer woodchucks will help keep your outdoor space free of ticks. Also, avoid having piles of shrubs, groundcover, and leaves left around your home.

Finally, shower and inspect your kids. In fact, studies show that kids who take a shower immediately after spending time outdoors are at a lower risk of getting Lyme disease.
