Why are elderly parents in N. America put into senior facilities?

It is a very painful decision to send your parents to a senior facilities or nursing home especially when you remember all the love, time, care, and sacrifices they provided you. Due to the burden of expenses or insufficient time to take care of them, many Americans cannot feel guilty about sending their parents to senior citizen facilities. Many older individuals do not prefer to live with their kids and actually want more attention and a place where their basic needs are taken care of without being an extra burden to their family. There they can enjoy social activities with people the same age and where they do not feel lonely. Some parents cannot afford their increased medical expenses and stay in their own homes and their children may not be in a position to provide them financial assistance to manage. Therefore, the alternative is to stay at an old-age facility.

It is true that some individuals send their parents to senior facilities so they can be free to travel and to maintain their privacy. The younger generation is busy with both parents working and they just don’t have enough time to take care of the parents and address their medical problems. Furthermore, some families who have taken care of their elders are said to suffer from stress and depression as a result of the financial and emotional pressures of working and being caretakers of elderly parents.

Transferring to a nursing home can actually help the elderly preserve their independence in that they feel they are not totally dependent on the family due to their failing health. Depending on the age and health of the elderly parent, it may end up being a financial burden on the family if one of the family has to stop working in order to give the care that person needs. This can lead to feelings of guilt on the part of the parent and feelings of resentment on the part of the family member who has to provide care.
