When Should Your Child Be Immunized and For What

Between birth and until your child reaches the age of six, you, as a parent, will be offered child vaccinations (either for free or for a fee) to protect them against various diseases.

Experts advise that children should be vaccinated as soon as they turn two months to protect them against disease. It's also important to follow the recommended schedule as well. Vaccination is important because it protects your children from various illnesses that could otherwise not only seriously harm them, but cause long-term disability and in even worse cases, death.

Generally, there are 14 types of diseases that your child should be vaccinated for. This includes varicella or chickenpox, diphtheria, Haemophilus Influenzae Type B (Hib), Hepatitis B, Influenza, Measles, Meningococcal, Mumps, Whooping Cough (Pertussis), Pneumococcal, Polio, Rotavirus, Rubella, and Tetanus.

Many times, these vaccines will require more than one dose for total immunity. It's important that your child get the recommended number of doses per vaccine and on time for total protection. Also, children suffering from chronic illnesses may have to get additional vaccines as well or additional doses, depending on the recommendation of their physician.

It's important to have your child's immunization recorded properly and to take it with you during every appointment for updating. It should go without saying that it is also extremely important that you keep your record in a safe place. Losing a record will be particularly troublesome, especially in certain countries where schools, for example, require a complete immunization record before admission. It's also important to have an up-to-date record when moving to a new area as there's no central immunization registry available worldwide.
